Privacy Policy
The short version. We run no servers that hold your memories. Everything you add to Nostalgia lives on your device and in your own iCloud account, which we cannot read. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The one time information leaves your device to anyone other than Apple is when you search for something — a place, a song, a film, a book, a video — and that search has to reach the service that answers it.
1. Who we are
Nostalgia (the "App") is provided by Nostalgia ("we", "us", "our"). This policy explains what happens to information when you use the App. You can reach us at any time at contact@getnostalgia.app.
2. What we do not do
We want to be specific rather than reassuring, so, concretely, the App does not:
- require an account, an email address, a phone number or a profile;
- operate any server that stores, receives or backs up your entries;
- collect analytics, usage statistics, behavioural data or device identifiers;
- include any advertising SDK, attribution SDK or third-party analytics SDK;
- track you across apps or websites, or fingerprint your device;
- sell, rent or share your personal information with data brokers, ever.
Because the App collects no personal information, we hold no profile of you that could be breached, subpoenaed or sold. This website is the single exception, and only if you choose to hand us an email address — section 12 sets out exactly what that involves.
3. What the App stores, and where
Everything you create — entry text, photographs, places, quotes, recipes, media you have saved, albums, tags and settings — is written to your device and, if you are signed in to iCloud, synchronised through your own iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit private database.
A CloudKit private database belongs to your Apple Account, not to us. We have no credentials for it, no administrative view of it, and no technical means of reading its contents. Apple's handling of that data is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy. You can stop iCloud syncing at any time in iOS Settings, and the App will continue to work with the copy on your device.
4. Shared albums
When you create a shared album and invite someone, the App uses Apple's CloudKit shared database. The content you share moves between you and the people you invite within Apple's infrastructure. It does not pass through any server we operate, and we cannot see it.
Two consequences are worth stating plainly:
- Anyone you invite can see everything in that album. They may be able to save, screenshot or copy it. Share only with people you trust, and only what you are content for them to keep.
- We cannot retrieve or delete shared content for you. Because we have no access, removing a participant or deleting the album is something you do in the App — we have no ability to do it on your behalf.
Participants are identified to each other through Apple's sharing system using the Apple Account details Apple chooses to display. We neither receive nor store that information.
5. Look-ups you trigger
Several features work by asking an outside service a question. This is the one place information leaves your device to a party other than Apple, so it deserves a precise description. In each case what is sent is your search term and the technical information any internet request necessarily carries, such as your IP address. Your entries, your library and your identity are not sent, and we receive nothing back about you.
- Places — place searches and map display use Apple Maps. Your query and approximate location, if you have granted location access, go to Apple.
- Music — searching for an album, song or artist queries the Apple Music catalogue. Opening an item hands off to the Apple Music app.
- Books — cover, description and author look-ups query Apple's book metadata services.
- Films and television — poster, description and cast look-ups query TMDB, a third-party metadata provider, under its own privacy policy.
- YouTube — video search and video details query YouTube, a Google service, governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
- Rides — choosing to call an Uber or a Cabify opens that company's app or website and passes the destination you selected to it. From that point their terms and privacy policy govern, not ours.
These services are contacted only when you actively search or tap. The App does not query them in the background.
6. Purchases
Nostalgia Gold is sold through the Apple App Store. Apple processes the payment and manages the subscription. We never receive your card number, billing address, Apple Account credentials or any other payment detail. What we receive from Apple is a receipt confirming that a valid purchase exists, which the App uses to unlock Gold features. Apple also provides us with aggregated, anonymised sales reports that cannot be traced to an individual.
7. Photographs and system permissions
The App asks for access to your photo library only when you add a photo, and iOS lets you grant access to selected photos rather than the whole library. Photos you add are copied into the App's own storage. The App does not read, index, scan or upload the rest of your library. If you grant location access, it is used to find nearby places and is not recorded by us.
8. Crash reports
If you have opted in to sharing analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple may send us anonymised crash logs. These contain technical details of the failure — device model, operating system version, stack trace — and never the contents of your entries. This is controlled by your iOS settings, not by the App, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
9. Children
The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will act on it — though in practice, because the App collects no personal information from any user, there is normally nothing for us to hold or delete.
10. Your rights
We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and we have not done so in the preceding twelve months. Because we hold no personal information, there is no data for us to disclose or delete in response to a request, and we cannot identify individual users. If you would like to make a request or ask a question about any of this, write to contact@getnostalgia.app.
11. Security
Data on your device is protected by iOS data protection and your device passcode. Data in iCloud is protected by Apple's encryption, and if you have enabled Advanced Data Protection on your Apple Account, your CloudKit private database is end-to-end encrypted such that not even Apple can read it. Keeping your device passcode and Apple Account secure is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your memories.
12. This website and the launch email
This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics and carries no advertising or tracking scripts. Visiting it leaves nothing behind on your device.
Until Nostalgia is available on the App Store, the site offers a field where you can leave an email address to be told when it launches. That field is entirely optional and no part of the site or the App depends on it.
If you do submit an address:
- it is sent to and stored by Loops, an email service acting as our processor, whose own privacy policy is at loops.so/privacy;
- we use it for one purpose — to tell you, once, that the App has launched — and possibly a short note beforehand if the release slips substantially;
- we do not sell it, rent it, share it with advertisers or use it to profile you;
- every message carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and you may instead write to contact@getnostalgia.app at any time to be removed;
- the whole list is deleted once the launch announcement has gone out and anyone who wants to stay in touch has said so.
The address you give the website is never connected to anything inside the App, which has no accounts and no way to identify you in the first place.
13. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we will update the date at the top of this page and note the change in the App's release notes before it takes effect.
